At MG Software, we do not work daily with Laravel or Django because our stack centers around Node.js, TypeScript, and Next.js. When clients specifically need a PHP or Python solution, we advise based on the project and team composition. We recommend Laravel for web applications with complex UI interactions thanks to Livewire, and for SaaS platforms that benefit from the extensive Laravel ecosystem with packages for payments, notifications, and queues. We suggest Django when data science integration, machine learning, or a powerful admin panel is needed. For new projects without language preference, we always propose our TypeScript stack as a modern alternative that combines advantages from both worlds.

Migrating: what to consider?

Migration between Laravel and Django is a significant effort because the languages and ORM structures differ fundamentally. Eloquent (Active Record) and Django ORM (Data Mapper-like) use different patterns for database interaction. It is often more efficient to rebuild per module in the target framework. Start by mapping database schemas and business logic before writing any code. Blade templates must be rewritten to Django Templates or a frontend framework. Django provides more built-in functionality, especially the admin panel, and Python opens doors to data science and machine learning. Choose based on your team expertise, project type, and long-term plans for the platform.
In benchmarks, both frameworks perform comparably for standard web applications. Laravel with OPcache and PHP 8.3 JIT and Django with gunicorn deliver similar response times for typical CRUD operations. For most applications, framework speed is not the bottleneck; database queries and external API calls determine performance. When pure API speed matters, Django with async views offers a slight advantage for I/O-intensive tasks.
Migration between Laravel and Django is a significant effort because the languages and ORM structures differ fundamentally. For pure web development, the Laravel talent pool is larger and more affordable. PHP has limited data science support compared to Python. PHP libraries like php-ml and Rubix ML exist, but the ecosystem is many times smaller than Python's numpy, pandas, and scikit-learn.
