Why Invest in Custom Software (2026 Update)

Introduction

The software landscape is shifting faster than ever. For years, businesses relied on standard SaaS packages for everything. But at MG Software in 2026 we see a clear trend: more and more organizations are deliberately choosing custom-built software. And the reasons are stronger than two years ago.

In this article we explain why 2026 is the year to seriously consider software built specifically for your business, with current pricing, timelines and what AI-accelerated development means for your investment. We base this on our own 2025 quote data and projects delivered through May 2026.

Off-the-Shelf Software No Longer Fits

Many businesses started with standard tools. A CRM here, a project management tool there, and an accounting package on top. But as the company grows, so do the limitations. You end up adapting your workflow to the software instead of the other way around.

In 2026, that is no longer necessary. Modern development methods, AI coding assistants like Cursor and Claude Code, and frameworks like Next.js 16 let custom software be built 30 to 40 percent faster and more affordably than in 2024. It is no longer reserved for large corporations with budgets in the hundreds of thousands.

Competitive Advantage Through Unique Processes

Your business is unique. Your processes, client relationships, and internal workflows are different from your competitors. When you use the same software as everyone else, you lose the ability to differentiate.

Custom software translates your unique way of working into a digital system. Think of a CRM with customer analytics, a real-time dashboard, or a client portal with role-based access. That means faster turnaround times, fewer errors, and a better experience for both your employees and your customers.

The Hidden Costs of SaaS

"Worldwide end-user spending on public cloud services is forecast to grow 21.5% to total $723.4 billion in 2025, up from $595.7 billion in 2024."

— Gartner press release, November 2024

SaaS subscriptions look cheap, but costs add up. Per-user licenses, add-ons for features you actually need, and annual price increases that averaged 12 to 22 percent in 2024-2025 across major vendors like Salesforce, HubSpot and Atlassian. For a 25-user team across a 4-year horizon, you can easily reach €40,000 to €70,000 in pure license cost before any optional add-ons.

On top of that, you depend on someone else's roadmap. If the SaaS provider removes a feature, bundles it into a higher tier, or raises pricing, your options are limited. A comparable custom solution typically requires a higher upfront investment but afterwards only hosting (€50 to €300 per month) plus optional further development. With custom software you own your system and your data.

When Is Custom the Right Choice

Custom software is not for everyone. If your processes are entirely standard and an existing package fits perfectly, there is no reason to change. But once you find yourself building workarounds, manually transferring data, or missing critical features that directly cost money, it is time to consider custom solutions. A useful rule of thumb: if you spend more than 5 hours a week on manual handoffs between tools, custom typically pays back within 12 to 18 months.

At MG Software we always start with a thorough analysis of your situation. In roughly 1 in 5 intakes during 2025 we recommended staying with an existing SaaS solution because the business case was not strong enough. We only build when it adds real value.

Conclusion

The barrier to investing in custom software has never been lower in 2026. AI coding assistants and frameworks like Next.js 16, Supabase and Bun make it possible to build faster, more affordably and more flexibly than two years ago. For the right use case it is no longer a luxury: it is a strategic decision that pays back within one to two years.
